The Dream System will wake you up. Sony DAV C450 Theater System I was looking for a cheap yet good quality Home Theater System to go with my Sony Wega Flat screen. My budget was...
I’m no audiophile and I’ve never aspired to be. I just wanted more out of my movie watching experience since I’ve just bought a 27″ flat-screen HDTV without having to spend big bucks (since I’m broke after the TV purchase!) on audio/video equipments. I don’t plan on expanding my entertainment systems with the latest and greatest equipments - so ease of setup and operation was another key point to what I was looking for. Finally, I didn’t want to turn my livingroom area into Matrix-like space with all sorts of flashing lights and fancy wiring; I wanted a simple but elegant setup. This system met all of my criteria.
Setup was very easy since all the speaker wires (and the speaker inputs) are logically color-coordinated. Just a simple basic wiring diagram was enough to guide me through the setup. The operation of the unit is very simple as well since there’s a single button that allows you to toggle through all the different sound modes. (Although knowing the technical details of what the different modes are used for is beyond my interest.) I live in a studio apartment and never had the occasion to crank up the sound to its maximum level to test the sound quality to its limits, but watching “Black Hawk Down” at the highest volumn level that would not get the neighbors on the phone with the police, I was completely satisfied with how the system sounded.
Just a few minor irritations. The ventilation is poor on the unit. My entertainment stand is open in the front and has a hole (~4 inches in diameter) in the back, but the system’s top and side felt “warm-hot” after watching my DVD. The manual has explicit warnings about overheating, but I don’t think that this will be a big issue. The remote control has tiny tiny buttons — which I consider to be poor design. Plus, if you do not own a Sony TV, the large amount of space taken up by TV control on the remote is unnecessary. Finally, the display can have a bit more pizzazz than just monochromatic green display at this day and age.
Nonetheless, I’d highly recommend this system to anyone who’s looking for all-in-one system for under $350. (I paid $305 + 30 S%26H at etronics.com)
