I have had the chance to hear out the Sony DAV-C900 Dream Home Theater system. I have noticed that Sony’s new home theater and speaker packages have become more popular. I did not like the previous system because the speakers seemed a little too weak and small. However, the Sony DAV-C900 was something that was totally different, here’s what I found:

Price:

The Sony DAV-C900 goes for as little as around $700 right now. For everything that you get in this system, I think that it’s simply a steal! In this package, you get four identicle speakers on tall gorgeous stands, seperate center channel, subwoofer, and an “All-In-One Receiver/Disc Player”. This receiver can play CDs, SACDs (Super Audio CDs), DVDs, and it can handle both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 formats. In comparison to Bose with their Life Style and new DVD systems, you get so much more with the Sony DAV-C900. So for such a low price of $700, you’re getting so much!

Looks and Styling:

Wow, the Sony DAV-C900 has some really attractive looking speakers. Most people love tall and slim speakers, they look very elegant. Without any doubt, these speakers don’t have a cheap look. They will look great in any room. Plus, the subwoofer is really cool looking, rather than just being a normal looking dark cabinet. This thing will surely get attention!

Durability:

Like most other Sony products, the Sony DAV-C900 is pretty high quality. The receiver is pretty good quality, and the speakers are good. I know many people that use these kinds of speakers, and no one seems to have any problems with them. These speakers should be able to last, and they are probably difficult to blow out. After feeling the drivers, they really felt solid.

Ease of Use:

The Sony DAV-C900 is an All-In-One system, but it isn’t poor quality thankfully. Everything is very easy to install. For people who aren’t very electronically literate, they should be able to hook this system up with success. The Sony DAV-C900 is definitely easier to set up than most conventional home theater systems. I found the receiver/player to be easy to use. The Sony DAV-C900 comes with a nice looking remote. I believe that Sony remotes are probably the easiest ones to use. I am able to use most Sony remotes with my eyes closed. You can also operate it easily from the unit itself. For those of you that have trouble with electronics, the Sony DAV-C900 may suit you well.

Sound:

The sound quality is quite surprising. The drivers used on the speakers are a 5/8″ tweeter, and dual 2″ woofers. These are very small, however they are capable of producing clear and powerful sound. They definitely hit all the right notes when watching movies, such as DVDs. The digital soundtracks are handled with precision, the sound doesn’t feel compressed in the movies. Bose speakers tend to feel more compressed. Despite having the small size, the speakers actually have quite of a spacious sound. Overall, they do handle music pretty well. However, when I was listening to heavy metal and trying to get it loud, the speakers seemed to really get pushed, and the sound simply didn’t come out freely like it would on larger speakers. However, for most average users, it would be more than enough.

The Sony DAV-C900 also handles Super Audio CDs (SACD). This technology allows you to listen to music in digital formats. Sony and Philips both use this technology. It competes with DVD audio. Another cool feature of the Sony DAV-C900 is that it has both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 surroudn sound. Thiese will give you an amazing home theater experience.

Bass:

The Sony DAV-C900 comes with a subwoofer. In the quieter ranges, it is capable of hitting some nice bass notes and creating an adequate amount of bass. I’ve been using large subwoofers for a long time, and it doesn’t compare to my Velodyne CT-120. But this is a small sub, but it does what it’s supposed to do. It will most likely create enough bass for most average users.

The Verdict:

For the price, you simply can’t go wrong with the Sony DAV-C900. It gives you so much! You get a receiver, CD player, SACD player, and DVD player all in one! Plus you get the cool Dolby Digital and DTS formats which are great for watching the DVDs. Then you get five speakers, and overall, they sound great for their size. Once again, it proves that size isn’t always an issue. This system also includes a subwoofer to hit all of the bass notes. And what did you say? ONLY $700!, this is yet another Bose killer, and truly a fantasy that is real.
