This is my/our first home theater, but I was keeping an eye on various units for awhile. I think the HT95 is the best of the consumer Panasonics yet to come out, it has the highest power rating of the Panasonics, the sub-woofer size is increased, and it is priced fairly well for a a 5-disc unit. Importantly for me, it also provides COMPONENT video out as well as SHVS and composite. It also has a 54MHz converter for non-interlaced (progressive scan) HDTV playback.

The controls are relatively easy, but can be confusing if you haven’t used certain ones for awhile (other than just insert disc and play) and have difficulty reading the small print on the crowded remote. Having to check that your in 5:1 surround or 9:6 aspect is kind of annoying, and pushing the wrong button on the remote can cause the disc to restart.

Set-up is straight forward with striped wires, and tags that can be added to each speaker wire. Our living room is on the small side, and the wires are a bit short for good wall placement and discretely hiding the wires. A larger gauge and longer wires would be an improvement. Wires to the sub-woofer are a slightly larger gauge, and should be used for all speakers with an increase in length.

In the past, I would A/B the Panasonic with other brands and the Panasonics always seemed to be a fuller sound with more presence. Bottom-end sound is good, and generally everything sounds better at a higher volume level (otherwise there is not much sense of “surround” and may as well use the TV speakers).

There are all the standard adjustments and stuff to play with, along with test mode, seat position, and a few selectable delays front to rear. I haven’t had the interest to delve into these very much, just a glance and few quick adjustments/settings.

We also desired the silver finish for our room, over other brands that come in black.
