I bought this system for under two hundred dollars and at that price, I consider it steal.
So far, I think this is a pretty neat system. I have not used it for much but I have used it for a couple of things.
So far I have used it to watch DVDs and also to listen to music from MP3 files recorded on a SanDisk 128 MB SD media card.
With the DVD, I had no problems.
When playing songs from the SD memory card, I had a couple of problems and am not sure if it is the fault of the card, the system, or me.
1. The skip back one track button on the remote only takes me as far as the beginning of the current song. I can never get back to a previous song.
2. The first song I play from an SD memory card cuts out about five seconds into the song.
The second problem could possibly be the fault of the card, since I have only tried it with one so far. The first problem seems like it might be a problem with the system but it might be the card as well. So do not take it as gospel that you will have any such problem playing MP3 files from an SD card that I did.
In general, I think the ability to play songs off of a media card is a very good one and I am glad they included this feature!
These days, everyone has iTunes. So it is nice to be able to copy your MP3 files to the card, and then play them on your this system. The songs you buy from iTunes probably will not play this way but the songs you load into iTunes from your own CDs do play.
Another neat trick I am doing with this system is playing streaming audio to it from iTunes on my Mac. What enables me to do this is a small, inexpensive, incredibly feature-packed device called an Airport Express (SRP is $129). It has several features, and they work well together.
One, is called AirTunes, and it receives streaming audio over an 802.11 connection from the iTunes application. The other is it is a full-fledged WiFi hub (just one RJ-45 connector though), and has a USB port that you can connect a printer to and use it as a wireless printing station.
The Apple iTunes application that runs on Mac is what you use to copy songs to your iPod. It is also great for buying tunes online, or ripping audio tracks from CDs you have already bought into your computer as MP3 files.
I love streaming the music wireless from my Mac to this device and the only thing I had to buy to be able to do this was an Airport Express.
I have not been able to pull in a signal through the FM radio tuner yet but the location I put this in is not very good as far as reception in general. Also, I might not have connected the antenna right - or it might be a bad antenna. Sometime soon I will be trying out another antenna and possibly moving the system to the opposite corner of the room.
The unit comes with a remote control that seems pretty decent.
There is an auto sleep feature which automatically turns the unit off if it has not been used to play anything for a while. You can turn it off and on with the remote, so this really is not an inconvenience and probably saves some energy.
It has 6.1 channel (7 speakers, including one subwoofer) digital audio. It comes with a remote control.
I saw a review out on the web somewhere that complained about hum. Personally, I have not noticed any hum. I do want to point out one general rule.
I know that if you take different audio components and plug them into different wall switches or power strips, you are often going to get some hum from doing that - which is not necessarily the equipment’s fault.
For me, the most amazing thing about this system was its price. I bought it on sale at Best Buy either at the end of 2004 or the beginning of 2005. It only cost me about $190. I love this price! I have no idea what the SRP on this particular product is but at the price I paid for it, I consider it a bargain.
This review is kind of preliminary and I will probably revise or replace it after I have used the system for more things. Right now, it is not comprehensive. However, no one else has reviewed the product here yet. So I wanted to at least review the parts of it that I have tried out yet.
The prettiest pieces of plastic I’ve ever decorated with. Koss KS2503 Theater System I had been told Koss is a good brand, so I bought this for $150 from Best Buy a year ago. I didn't use it for 6 m...
