I have owned a DVD player for quite some time and think the image quality is superb. Unfortunately I have had to run the sound via my old 2-channel JVC bookshelf system so I have not had the pleasure of experiencing the passing bullets as Neo and Trinity dodge the onslaught of gunfire in the lobby.

Then one day I received the Sony Dream System as a gift and I was overjoyed.

First impression is that the system is designed well, looks great and is easy to set up. I had everything out and hooked up in minutes. I then placed five DVD’s in the changer, popped some corn and sat back ready to “enter” the Matrix.

The image was on par with my other machine but the first thing I noticed was that the sound was flat. At first I thought that the factory presets were all wrong. I am definately of the maximum bass persuasion. So I fiddled with the settings which was not the most intuitive but when satisfied I pressed play….

The sound was still flat.

I then repositioned all the speakers thinking that the sound staging was preset in a certain configuration. After fiddling around for a while I ended in the middle of the room with five speakers surrounding me, sitting on top of the bass module, tangled in wire….

the sound was still flat. (I did find that the bass module is a great end-table for those with contemporary furnishings.)

I then decided to retry my old 2 channel JVC and the sound was good.

Needless to say I packed up the system (which by the way is an absolute bear. You need the 18 precision movements in complete coordination to get the styrofoam to fit with all all the pieces in place.) and returned it.

I am back to my old set-up and still looking for a system.
