I recently set up a 47″ LCD in a family room and needed a “sound box” to complete the system. The Sony HT-5500D met the need. I found the unit at Costco. The actual model number on the box was different, but that was due to two speaker stands in the box.

The DVD player allows for Five CDR or DVD discs to be in the carousel at time. A nice feature is while one disc is playing, an exchange boot can be selected, allowing 2 discs to be exchanged. Further selecting Skip Disc at that point allow the carousel to revolve to the other two discs, all while the first is still playing.

The main unit has two HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) inputs and one output. The output goes to the HDTV. One of the HDMI inputs is used by the DVR. I hope to save the other for a Blue-ray box.

Speaker setup was easy, however it took awhile to figure out the speaker wire-nuts at the back of the unit. They are loosed by turning to the left, the wire inserted, then tightened by turning. I was trying to push down.

My LCD TV had an digital optical output. The Sony has two digital optical inputs, set as AV1 and AV2. I elected to pass a cable from the HDTV to AV1. Now when I watch HD from cable, I can also pass the Surround Sound to the Sony Unit.

I have some problem with synchronizing the sound on both the HDTV and the Sony, so I turn the speakers on the TV down.

The speaker wire included was adequate, but actually a little short for one of my rear surround speaker choices. Each wire has unique color coding to maintain polarity. More speaker wire is readily available in the stores. Look for a spool that allows one to keep the two wires identified. Positive on the speaker, positive on the sound box.
