It is a DREAM system Sony DAV S500 Theater System I received the Sony DAV-S500 as a gift. I had looked at others but this was the one. The majority of the system is...
I was looking for a home-theater-in-a-box system because I did not have anything (besides a VCR) to go with my TV. No stereo, no dvd player, no CD player. I couldn’t hear the TV with the existing little-bitty speakers that are on the TV, and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money for a complete system. The Sony DAV-S500 has not disappointed yet.
I’m not an audiophile so don’t expect to read any technical stuff here. I was debating about a multi-disc versus single disc player. The single disc player cost less and I thought that there may possibly be future mechanical problems with a multi-disc player. So that narrowed it down to the Sony DAV-S500 and the Panasonic HT90. But the main reason I got the Sony was because of its compact size. It’s only a single, integrated unit and I don’t have a lot of space in my TV room. The speakers are small but give a lot of sound.
The unit is rated at 280 watts and it’s a good amount of power for a small TV room or bedroom. If you have a larger room, I’d recommend getting the DAV-C700 which is rated at a higher power. The first DVD I rented was Jurassic Park 3. I had to crank it up to test out the system. The windows rattled but there was hardly any distortion. I don’t really need to listen to music/CDs/DVDs that loudly, so the 280 watts is good enough for me.
Accessories: The remote control has small buttons, so sometimes it’s hard to press the one you want. It comes with batteries and glows in the dark for a little while after you turn off the light. The system also comes with 1 video cable (RCA jacks on both ends. Some of the literature you see on the web at different web sites say that it comes with an S-video cable, but it doesn’t). The speakers come with the Sony-specific connectors already installed, and speaker wire to connect all 5 speakers and subwoofer. If you want Monster cables for the S-video and to hook up your VCR, then make sure you get them before you receive your system.
The unit can also play SACDs. However, I don’t know much about this technology so if you know what an SACD is, this will play it. As I understand it, the Panasonic HT90 can play MP3 CDs where as the Sony cannot. I have not yet verified this with the Sony but will do so in the near future.
If you don’t have a lot of space or have a small room, the Sony DAV-S500 is a good selection.
