I bought this DVD Dream System when it first became available, replacing the DAV-C700, from an online mega store. Straight out of the box, I found the unit easy to set up and instructions fairly well written. The aesthetics of this dvd player, in my opinion, is one of the best Ive seen. The smooth curvaceous lines of the head unit as well as the speakers blended very well in our living room. Ive seen many dvd systems before and this sony was clearly the best looking system ive seen upto date.

As for performance, DVD playback is clear and vivid as it should be for any DVD player. Sound reproduced through the numerous “sound fields” is somewhat overstated but this can be altered to one’s liking with the numerous options available. I found the bass lacking even at its highest setting and the subwoofer plugged in. One thing I found annoying was the slow mechanism of the eject, load, and disc change function for the DVD.

Ok, so this system although it had a few personal shortcomings was in my opinion a good buy….until the DVD portion of this unit stopped working. The problem started off by the power not shutting off when the power button was depressed on the remote. Then the problem moved over to the DVD where the playback function at first stopped playing the DVD and then stopped playing all together. This is when I realized by doing a bit of reading online that countless other DVD dream system owners had and were experiencing the same issues. My system was under warranty so off it went to a repair center and then off to sony’s own repair center when the local sony repair shop realized the problem could not be fixed. To make a long story short, and to be fair to all parties involved, I got a brand new DVD dream system from Sony (the upgrade DAV-9), shipped Next Day Service…but it took me a approx 5 weeks from the day that I took my original unit in for service. End of story? no…i wish it was. Yes, you guessed it the DAV-9 developed the same issues…twice…both fixed under warranty…but needless to say I purchased the extended warranty and will probably not buy an electronic equipment manufactured by Sony beside their TVs and playstation.

Bottom line: Great system when it works and aesthetics are nicer than most home in a box systems.
