I had tears in my eyes during the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies when Luciano Pavarotti performed. We had just remembered to turn the surround sound on. Boom! His voice and the gorgeous music flooded our living room. My husband looked at me and we smiled. We were mesmerized by the sights and sounds of the Olympics but we were grinning with giddy delight still about our home theater system.

Brief history: We knew we needed to replace the old Pioneer system from our long gone by newlywed days. So this past fall we purchased the Panasonic SC-HT930 at Boscov’s. We paid about $400 for it. (This is average. I have since seen them priced between $350-$450.) We were researching home theater systems for the past year. We narrowed it down to this system and a JVC model. What sold us on the Panasonic were two things: the amazing sound quality and the ability to automatically play all of the cds in random mode.

The older system from our college days allowed you to insert 5 cds and have them all play randomly. So the first song you might hear would be from disc 2, track 7 then it would play disc 4, track 1 and so on. Many of the newer systems won’t do this without you programming it to do so. Or they only play one cd at a time randomly. The Panasonic allows you to hit a couple of buttons and you are in the desired random mode. This feature was the deal maker for us.

As I said, sound quality on the 1000 watt Panasonic SC-HT930 is fantastic! The bass is terrific. It can shake the house. We probably don’t need this much power for our 264 square foot living room. But I love listening to music through this system and it sounds wonderful throughout the entire house. Playing DVDs and using the surround sound is awesome as well. We enjoy staying home and watching movies more than going out to the theater!

Now I can’t tell you much on the tech or setup side. Hubby handles all of that. I believe set up was fairly easy to do as there was little to none swearing done by my darling husband. I do know that the Panasonic SC-HT930 comes with 10 main pieces: the receiver, sub woofer, 5 speakers, 2 stands, and a remote. It has a Dolby digital surround sound and it plays the following discs:

This system has a tremendous amount of features as described in the manual: “advanced progressive scan, convenient functions, navigation menus, sound field control, bass sound enhancement and more.” Honestly, I know and use only a small portion of these.

The Panasonic Sc-HT930 home theater system satisfies my basic need for playing and enjoying music with high quality sound. It meets my husband’s desires for cool technology and “geeky” gadgets. We are very happy with our purchase.
