Our six year old DVD Home Theatre was needing last rights. It was time to bid it farewell and get a new one. After searching through many stores, we ended up at Best Buy and selected the Sony HDX266. We were able to get it for $287, but I had a 12% coupon.
Some basic facts about the system. The total output power is 1000 watts @ 1.5 ohms, 80Hz, 10%THD. Compared to some of the others I have heard, the sound on this is very good. Not in the class with the $1000+ systems, but for its price range.
It comes with a Digital Media Port for your MP3 player. There is no I-Pod port, but that was not important for me.
The Sony will play most DVD’s and MP3 disc as well as regular CDs. We were disappointed that some of the Movies that were received from a relative overseas did not work on this player, but I guess that is what we get for being cheap and not buying American DVDs.
The remote, which was the first thing out of the box, has so many features that it can be somewhat overwhelming. There are several surround sound features, including Dolby Pro Logic and Pro Logic II for Movie and Music.
Set up was not difficult and most people should be able to complete it following the instructions provided. The difficult part is setting up the speakers, especially the rear speakers and getting the wiring to it in a way that keep the living room, or whatever room, from looking cluttered with wire. All the wiring you need comes in the box. There is a special microphone to use during setup.
There is an auto setup that runs after you turn it on the first time. Be ready for this, but if you forget, you can do it again.
The instructions come in English and Espanol.
One can set the picture for regualr 4:3 Letter Box, 4:3 Pan Scan or 16:9 TVs. Once that is done, you are ready to go.
The HDX266 comes with an HDMI interface for those who have a TV that will accept such a connection. There is no HDMI input.
The DVD player is fairly simple to operate. Changing discs can take some time to learn, so read the directions carefully. They are clear enough.
One can listen to music from MP3, CDs, AM %26 FM radio as well as watch movies or music DVDs.
Hopefully we will get six hears of service from our DVD Home Theatre system.
