The time had come for an upgrade. Although the solid 27″ color television had held up well and produced modest sound quality for an average viewer, it wasn’t enough amid newer technology. The DVD era had arrived and my home theater system was nonexistent. Further, I believe I owned the first CD player ever made to complement the 80s receiver made of stainless steel. All in all, I’d say I was ripe for a home theater system.

Where to begin? With electronics, no matter what year it is or trend that’s hot, you go in expecting a short shelf life and drastic drops in prices. It may deter the hesitant shopper, but fear not, quality is still affordable. After frequenting the category killer mega electronic stores and discount stores like Wal-Mart, I decided to heed Howie Long’s call and head to Radio Shack. Radio Shack’s special connection with afforded a special holiday deal on a 5 speaker, 1 subwoofer, receiver package for under $400, very competitively priced compared to Best Buy and Circuit City. What I was looking for was power, and this package had it. 2 front, 2 rear, and one center speaker totaled 500 watts, combined with another 200 from the sub and receiver totaled 700 watts of crystal clear surround sound. It didn’t take long to make the decision to open up a Radio Shack account.

The Installation:

Never the most enjoyable task in the world when dealing with electronics, installing the Home Theater System was somewhat difficult. Forgoing the pathetically skimpy wires they provided, I chose to use enough Monster Cable to hide the wiring where physically possible and fudge the rest. Putting the wire to the connectors was easy, but finding the right connections to the back of the receiver was complicated. Follow the book, take a break, repeat.

If you have multiple peripherals, get them situated first before wiring and plugging in to ensure enough space. Second, if you favor the DVD wave and own a Progressive Scan quality DVD player, buy the Fiber Optic wiring and put it in the slot in the receiver. The receiver will automatically detect it and your sound clarity will increase threefold. On a side note, spring for the S-Video Cable for the TV!

Lastly, take the time to browse through the different DSP settings on the receiver to optimize whatever you are viewing. My favorites are “Arena” for sporting events and “Theater” for movies. Fiddle with the volume knob to set the decibel level per speaker if you really want to blow the house down. You will be surprised how powerful 700 watts can sound at times.
