I got the Yamaha system to provide home theater sound and video for my new wall mounted plasma screen.

The YHT-800 system is really more of a collection of Yamaha parts, in one box. The 5 disc cd-dvd player has all the latest gadgets (progressive scan, 3:2 pulldown, DCDi Faroudja processing, etc), and the video looks great. The dvd picture is much better than my old Toshiba 1600 player.

The HTR-5550 receiver is a solid 5.1 unit. There are many reviews of it available online.

The speakers look great, and sound good. I live in an apartment, so clarity at loud volume isn’t required. The sub is fine for my needs.

This YHT-800 is not a unitized, all-in-one, easy setup, system. No color coded wires, full detailed manuals, or single remote controller. You get 5 boxes, 100′ of 18ga wire, one remote for the reciever, one for the dvd player, and the basic manuals for each component.

I added better speaker and connector wires, and a lighted (learning) universal remote; and it is a more “complete” system now.
