Well Well Well…
Yet another Sony Product has found it’s way into my heart. Just like my Digital Camcorder, I stumbled across this little gem quite by accident, while walking through the local Sears. There it was, flanking a Hitachi HDTV. Beautiful, really. The simple elegance matched so perfectly with the practicality of it all. I stood in awe while the eager salesguy fired it up for me. I was sold. I seem to recall my wife, though she denies it, say something along the lines that we should get it (and the Hitachi HDTV). The wheels were turning as I got home and jumped on the net to research it. Kind of pricey, and still pretty new, so no real reviews about it. What I did find helped me have a starting point when I went back to Sears to see it again. I visited this system three times before I bought it. Thank God Sears has a price match guarantee…saved me $200.00!!! They wanted $999.00 and I found it online for $799.00 and after a phone call for verification, it was mine.
Bringing it home. Let me tell you. The box is FREAKING HUGE! It took up every bit of rear space in my Honda Odyssey, that is, behind the middle seats. You can park two Geo Metros in the box alone…pretty much as heavy too!
I got it home and set it up immediately. Then the test…Terminator 2. I had to put it in and replay the beginning to tweak the speakers and all. To say that I was impressed is an understatement. I previously purchased the Sony (again, a Sony!) SAW-M40 12-inch subwoofer, for my old system, and had planned to use it to boost the little 8-incher this system has in it. Turns out the little 8-incher is more than adequate. I put the SAW-M40 back in the box and returned it (clever, ain’t I?)…Technically, that is another $150 off the price I paid!
All in all I am super-impressed with this system. There are some quirky things, for instance, if you are listening to the TV through the system, and you open one of the CD/DVD trays, it automatically goes into CD/DVD mode, thus shutting off the sound from the TV. Come on, Sony… The remote is a little perplexing too. My remote from my now unused Sony (!) S-530D DVD player was much easier to use, as far as DVD control is concerned. Obviously desingned by a different engineering group altogether!
Then there is the matter of the crappy speaker wire they send with it…just junk. I am in the marker for some Monster Cable, but have been busy buying new living room furniture to match this system!!!
With the exception of the two grand I spent on a new sofa and two recliners, I can’t complain. It is enjoyable having people over and seeing how they are drawn in by the system. There are always lots of questions. Then of course All I have to do is pop in a disk and let it speak for itself. email me if you have any questions ecorrus73@hotmail.com
