The Speaker System

Dimensions(W x H x D):

Amplifier: 17-1/8″ x 5-7/8″x 14-13/16″

Subwoofer: 9-1/4″ x 20-5/16″ x 16-3/16″

Surrounds: 6-1/2″ x 8-7/16″ x 8-7/16″

Center: 15-1/4″ x 6″ x 8-9/16″

The system comes complete with all 5 of your surround sound speakers. Before I get into the speakers, I will let you know that Onkyo is not a speakers manufacturer, they get their speakers from different speaker manufacturers and are allowed to put their name on it. With that said, the system’s 2 front speakers include dual 5-1/4″ woofers and a 1″ tweeter. The 2 surrounds come with a single 4″ woofer and a 1″ tweeter. Your center channel has dual 4″ woofers and the same 1″ tweeter. All speakers are magnetically shielded as to protect your television from interference.

The speakers have a beautiful black oak finish, and the cabinets are built to last.

The subwoofer puts out an amazing 150W of power through an 8″ driver. The subwoofer comes complete with Line level inputs and a volume control.

The Receiver

The receiver that comes with this system is the current Onkyo 500 model. The receiver is nto a stripped down version of it’s entry level receiver like it was with last years version of this system.

The output on the receiver is rated at 65W X 5 @ 8 Ohms (continuous). You also get the Dolby Digital, DTS Decoder and Pro Logic II which will let you receive surround sound from any source (VHS, Cable, CD..). The receiver will also do S-video switching with 4 S-Video inputs and 1 output. There are also 3 assignable digital inputs. Of course with all receivers is the AM/FM tuner, but no phono input!

One thing to note about the assignable inputs. Onkyo does not mark it’s digital inputs. This means that, for example, you may have a DVD player hooked up using 1 digital coax and a CD player using the optical input. You have to select the input, DVD in our case, then press the digital select button to select what digital input we are using, Coaxial 1 in our case. This setup only has to be done once as long as you don’t change your inputs around. The receiver will remember what digital input you set it to be. Small, but important tip!

Two things that really got me interested with the receiver with this package was, first, that it had front panel inputs (Video 3) with an S-Video input up front too. The second piece was that it was able to do A/B speakers allowing me to hookup additional speakers to the system in a different room.

The remote with the system is a pre-programmed remote control that will control other Onkyo components out of the box but you will need the additional codes to control your other components such as a TV, DVD, etc.

In Conclusion…

This system is amazing from what I heard. The system has the best clarity and sharpness for a system in this price range. I was comparing this system to a Kenwood 504/5 system, but this Onkyo blew it away.

If you’re looking for a system that has clarity, great clear sound, and don’t mind the bigger speaker size… Then I would highly recommend this system for you!
