Let’s face it, HTIB’s or “Home Theaters In a Box” are the ideal solution for most homes. They’re tidy, able to fit in most places, and as for value, they won’t leave moths is your already-strained wallet/purse. I’ve visited all the stores: Best Buy’s, Circuit City’s, Online Sites, and I’ve come to the conclusion after demoing out all the products, the Onkyo HTS-650 not only fits the bill, it pays you back like an investment.

The Good:

Bass: The Subwoofer hits as low as 65hz and it does it well; a tight low frequency with an accurate pitch. No unneccesary booms and there is definetly no boxiness in tonal quality.

Midrange: Smooth and mellow; the quality of the drivers will overceed any expectations one may have about the value.

Ashanti never sounded so well on a sub-400 dollar system.

High: The tweeter is surprisingly sweet. Flutes and violins are played on note and accurately. Piano Keys are warmly played throughout.

Value: 400 dollars will pay for a very good receiver but that would be meaningless if you could not afford matching speakers. The accompanying HT-R500 receiver is astounding and does it’s job like a pro. It will push 500watts with very low distortion; (.08% THD) with all the channels driven in fact.

Did I mention that Onkyo uses real wood? Not plastics or cheap ply-wood in their materials.

Cons:

These are not exactly “satellite” speakers. If you picture the “Bose Image” then quickly get it out of your head. Even the surrounds rival small “bookshelf” speakers. Not to mention, the HT-R500 is a large receiver itself, but still very capable in decor.

The Sub will not pound out as much bass as a “Quality” 10inch or 12inch Sub, but it does what it can well with authority, and by quality I mean brands such as Velodyne, Paradigm, etc.

It’s color is black. It will match most living rooms or sets but if black isn’t your cup of tea you’ll just have to settle.
