UPDATE: THE SUBTITLE GLITCH MENTIONED BELOW CAN BE EASILY FIXED AT A SONY SERVICE CENTER BY THE INSERTION OF A DVD WITH NEW SOFTWARE. THE PROCESS TAKES ONLY A FEW MINUTES AND DOES NOT REQUIRE ANYONE TO OPEN THE UNIT. I IMAGINE NEW UNITS HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED AS IT IS NOT A HARD CHANGE. GOOD LUCK.

There is no more stunningly designed home theatre system for under $1000–the brushed aluminum case and speakers when most companies provide plastic astound. The receiver is so tiny, it fits into spaces you could not possibly place a larger system. If you are the kind of person who can tell that the top of the subwoofer rattles at low frequency (I’m not), you probably want a high-end system anyway. But if you have an apartment in NYC (or elsewhere), you value compactness and enough inputs/outputs to hook up a standard system (with SPDIF inputs for internet radio from your computer and component video) and crisp DVD playback and powerful bass. I do not regret the purchase at all.

SEE UPDATE ABOVE, NO LONGER A PROBLEM…. But—- it does show subtitles when you first play a DVD ….no biggie though. you press the subtitle off button on the remote and they disappear and you are enveloped in sound and life is good. all things considered, i’d rather not have to press the subtitle off button, but at this price point for such a compact system (did i mention the progressive video?), the virtues far outweigh that tiny flaw.

buyer beware though—don’t be fooled into buying one of the older dream systems or the 550 that the retailers are pushing now (sometimes at higher prices even!)…. the speakers included here are much better than on the 550 (2 way rather than 1 way, though a tad smaller) and the wattage is much higher than on the underpowered older systems.

in sum, i’ve never written an epinion before. i love the dav-c770 enough to break my silence. its got to be a special system to inspire that!
